Along Came a Spider is sadly emblematic of much of Jerry Goldsmith's autumnal output. It's a virtual rewrite of its disappointing predecessor, Hollow Man, and sadly absent of the vitality and fierce originality that are the hallmarks of the composer's finest scores. Created from the same shopworn electronic and symphonic elements that constitute so much of Goldsmith's post-millennial efforts, Along Came a Spider emphasizes atmosphere over substance, yet achieves little of the suspense and danger required of the thriller genre. Goldsmith enthusiasts will find it difficult to shake the sense they've heard it all before, and that it's even more frustrating this time around. ~ Jason Ankeny
