With 6 Degrees of Separation, Jerry Goldsmith sharply satirizes the elitism and hypocrisy of the upper class -- but that's about all he does, rendering this score little more than a one-note exercise in cultural critique. Operating in tango and jazz idioms, Goldsmith creates a series of snotty, snooty themes that essentially make the same comment -- "Rich people are assholes" -- over and over again. This arch, arrogant music is just as unlikable as its fish-in-a-barrel targets. Elektra's 1994 CD soundtrack release jumbles about 15 minutes of Goldsmith's score with dialogue from the film and unrelated music -- from a consumer standpoint, it's an absolute train wreck. ~ Jason Ankeny
