Although concept albums are associated with classic rock, the vinyl 33 rpm albums, "The Tempatations Sing Smokey" and "Where Did Our Love Go", by the Supremes were the first long playing (LP) albums in popular music to be an event unto themselves. Previously, the '50's, and '60's albums by popular artists who made hits via singles were compilations of '45 hits and quickly forgotten standards of the time. The songs on the albums, "The Temptations Sing Smokey", and the Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go", not only had the hits and the soon to be released singles, but also included original material that would never be released as singles. In effect, these seminal albums provided a consistent sound throughout both sides. Those who found these lp's via the singles would not be disappointed by a happenstance approach to music selection that was the bane of early long playing albums by artists who made their name via 78's and 45's.
