King Solomon's Mines

While the 1985 adventure King Solomon's Mines is a blatant cash-in on the blockbuster success of the Indiana Jones series, to his credit composer Jerry Goldsmith scrupulously avoids aping John Williams' landmark score to Raiders of the Lost Ark, instead crafting a deliciously tongue-in-cheek soundtrack with the over-the-top energy and audacity of a Warner Bros. cartoon. Goldsmith's affection for bombast reaches its zenith here. His theme for fortune hunter Allan Quatermain (Richard Chamberlain) is pomp and pageantry in excelsis, while German antagonist Colonel Bockner (Herbert Lom) wreaks havoc to the strains of Wagner's famed "Ride of the Valkyries." Goldsmith abandons all pretenses of subtlety and substance here, and the results are delightful. Intrada's 1997 reissue adds a number of themes excised from the original 1985 Restless release. ~ Jason Ankeny
