Warlock is frustrating as much for what it is as for what it could have been. A surprisingly tepid and uninspired effort from Jerry Goldsmith, its banality is even more shocking given that the movie's antihero is the son of Satan, a subject that previously earned Goldsmith an Academy Award via The Omen. To his credit, Goldsmith avoids obvious retreads of his indelible Omen work here but he nevertheless rehashes elements of more recent scores like Legend, Under Fire and even Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend, all to diminishing returns. Too much of Warlock also suffers under the weight of Goldsmith's late-'80s fascination with synthesizers, which renders even the most suspenseful sequences awkward and leaden. If a hellish listen was what the composer intended, then he delivers in spades. ~ Jason Ankeny
