Marking the fourth collaboration between director Joe Dante and composer Jerry Goldsmith, the sci-fi adventure Innerspace boasts a rousing, delightfully clever score that combines traditional orchestration with cutting-edge electronic effects. Essentially a comedic take on the human-body adventure Fantastic Voyage, Innerspace's preposterous narrative and exaggerated visuals offer Goldsmith the opportunity to expand and miniaturize his central themes and motifs in relation to the action onscreen. By turns dramatic, comedic, and romantic, the score is further buoyed by a series of ingenious organic and synthetic effects that evoke the weird science that Dante conjures. But as it did with Goldsmith's previous Dante collaboration, Gremlins, Geffen butchered the completed score for the official soundtrack release, adding source material spanning from Sam Cooke's classic "Cupid" to Rod Stewart's tepid remake of "Twistin' the Night Away" at the expense of Goldsmith's contributions, which comprise only half the record. ~ Jason Ankeny
