LCD Soundsystem's temporary derailment is remedied entirely by this 12". "Yeah"'s momentum keeps building and building, working itself into a lather until throwing itself into acid-drenched overdrive. It begins innocently, as a pleasantly chugging indie-disco groove in the vein of "Beat Connection," with by-now-to-be-expected nagging vocals (one bit goes something like, "Yeah yeah yeah yeah-yeah yeah-yeah yeah/Yeah hey hey hey hey"). New noises, like percussive clatter and keyboard zaps, are added one by one until the whole thing turns into a terrifically obnoxious, out-of-control monstrosity -- akin to a snowball that develops into a boulder-sized mass once it finishes rolling down a steep hill. This describes the A-side, labeled "The Crass Version." The B-side, "The Pretentious Version," involves more noodling around with percussion and keyboards, and isn't nearly as abrasive by comparison. This isn't the event that was James Murphy's debut as LCD Soundsystem, but it's more than enough to increase the anticipation for the first LP. ~ Andy Kellman
